XVR Simulation participates in Home Team Festival 2019

Home Team Festival 2019 received an overwhelming response from the public as the Home Team showcased its latest equipment and technology capabilities.

The largest public showcase of the Home Team’s capabilities was held at Singapore Expo Halls 2 & 3 from 22-24 November 2019. The Home Team Festival experienced huge crowds from the public as they swarmed in to learn more about Singapore’s safety and security capabilities and future-readiness.

The Home Team Simulation System (HTS2) was featured amongst the latest technology adopted by the Home Team Departments, to enable training and learning in the Home Team. HTS2 is an incident command learning capability that trains in disaster management, logical thinking skills, critical and operational decision-making. Not only does the HTS2 provide a realistic and immersive training experience, the system allows the training to take place in a safe, controlled and repeatable environment. The system was developed by the Home Team Academy with support from XVR Simulation on the software development.

Putting it to the real test, HTS2 has been used to train and prepare for actual deployments such as the Formula One Grand Prix, 33rd ASEAN Summit, Trump-Kim Summit, etc.

At the booth, the public got to experience first-hand how the top-class nation’s guardians train and prepare for major incidents.

Virtual Reality (VR) headset station

Running on an XVR customized terrain environment based on actual locations in Singapore, the participant gets to immerse himself in the scenario. Navigating through the environment with the ‘teleport’ function, the participant can observe the realistic environment and a burning building incident where Home Team officers are responding to the incident.

Moving along the tour, there was an interactive zone where participants could pick up several cones lying around on the floor. This simple interaction showcased the type of functionalities the system can incorporate into different disaster incidents; interacting with objects within the VR environment to create a deeper sense of engagement and for different training objectives.

Last but not least, the participant can ‘teleport’ to a blinking cone to activate a ‘trigger’. Upon activation, the participant would observe a riot scene, whereby it is eventually suppressed by the emergency services personnel through the usage of the fire engine’s water jet.

‘Simulation Experience’ Station

At this station, the participants played out an ‘immigration process’ training scenario. The backdrop environment is based on Singapore’s Woodlands Checkpoint. The participant has to navigate through the crowd and climb up to the immigration checkpoint. Upon reaching the 2nd level, the participant has to navigate to an empty lane to proceed with the immigration process. Upon completion, the participant will reach the scanning area, where he has to scan his belongings.

This scenario, created with XVR Simulation, educated participants on procedures of the immigration process. With a few simple tweaks, Home Team trainees are able to participate and train in this realistic landscape on various training objectives.

“It is very heart-warming to see the younger generation so excited and engaged with our VR devices. I believe that XVR technology is heading the right direction, where we incorporate the latest VR technologies for disaster management training, and at the same time, keeping the trainees (younger generation) engaged,” expressed by Rayaint Goh, a XVR Scenario Designer, who has developed and constructed large scale disasters for incident command training.
